Putnisite: a new mineral from Western Australia

A new mineral, formally named Putnisite, was found in a surface outcrop at Lake Cowan, north of Norseman in Western Australia. It forms small isolated pseudocubic crystals up to 0.5 mm in size. It is translucent, with a pink streak and vitreous lustre; it has one excellent and two good cleavages and a Mohs hardness of 1.5-2.

Canning stock route project radio carbon dates a real result

A large-scale project to directly-date both charcoal and inorganic-pigmented pictographs along the Canning stock route using plasma oxidation combined with accelerator mass spectrometry has yielded some impressive results. The new technique has produced radio carbon dates for paint fragments as small as 10 micrograms in width and has yielded the largest number of art dates from any region in the world with thirty-six radiocarbon age determinations that range from 3000 years ago to Modern.

Sentinel has started work

The new Sentinel-1a radar satellite launched by The European Union is working well and has returned its first images of Earth. Sentinel was launched this month and is one of many orbiting sensors to be launched in coming years that will monitor the state of the planet. The radar maps will be used in urban planning, mapping natural disasters, and for monitoring remote locations.

GSA Council Elections

In July 2014, the Governing Council will be implemented. The process of electing the new Governing Council of GSA is now in progress. Congratulations to the recently elected Division Councillors; Roger Bateman, WA Division; Michelle Cooper, ACT Division and Christine Edgoose, NT Division.

Call for General Councillors

The Executive is now calling for nominations for the five positions of General Councillor to complete the inaugural nine person Council. As advised in numerous communications, the Governing Council will combine the authority of the current Executive and the biennial Council meeting. The five General Councillors will be determined by a ballot of all members and the new Council will be endorsed on 8th July 2014, at the 2014 AGM of the Society, to be held in association with the AESC in Newcastle.

The Nomination process: Nominations are open to almost all membership categories (click here for full details), subject to endorsement by two Full or Retired Members. They close on 21st May, 2014, and ballot papers will be mailed to all Members by 31st May with voting to close by 30th June. The General Councillor Nomination form is available here.

Your Nomination should include:
A summary of qualifications to serve as a Councillor (maximum of 400 words) which includes:
   a.  Academic, professional and community qualifications and recognition;
   b.  Relevant work and board/committee experience;
   c.  Portrait image of yourself (optional)
   d.  Contributions to GSA and
   e.  Key issues that you believe that GSA needs to address.

It should be forwarded to: info@gsa.org.au by no later than 21st May, 2014.

Additional Information:
The new governance model has been developed to strengthen the strategic decision making and development of the GSA, and to revitalise an organisation that has hardly grown its membership during the recent period of increased interest and enrolments in geoscience. It will meet quarterly by teleconference with one face to face meeting each year. Substantial authority will be delegated to the CEO and a smaller Executive, drawn from within Council, to ensure prompt response to opportunities and issues. The President will be appointed from the elected Council.

Membership of the new Council will be a significant, national, professional responsibility, and an exciting opportunity for any Member committed to our profession, its standing and its growth. An ideal Council will include a mix of attributes such as: vision and a national perspective; energy and enthusiasm; wisdom; business acumen and management experience; experience in GSA committees; and recognition within the profession. We are starting an exciting new chapter in the evolution of GSA and here is your opportunity to shape the future of the Society.

If you have any queries about the nomination process, or what may be involved in becoming a Councillor, please contact sue@gsa.org.au or one of the Governance committee members: Jim Ross, Chris Yeats, Laurie Hutton laurie.hutton@dnrm.qld.gov.au or Ian Graham i.graham@unsw.edu.au

  •  Infrastructure, Service and Community
  •  Dynamic Planet
  •  Living Planet.

Dedicated symposia include:

PETM halted by bacteria?

New research suggests bacteria locked up sufficient carbon to halt a period of extreme warmth during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum. Marine barite accumulation rates show distinct peaks during this time interval, suggesting a general increase in export productivity - from the photic zone to depth with higher seawater temperatures at the time increasing bacterial activity.

Sentinel for asteroids boosted by Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization data

The B612 Foundation, a group that aims to launch a Sentinel Space Telescope Mission to monitor for incoming potential asteroid impacts, has used Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization data to suggest that Earth is hit by a multi-megaton asteroid about every 100 years. The foundation says this data supports the urgent need for such a monitoring system.
