NEWSBREAKERSPrivate enterprise next to the MoonA commercial space company, Moon Express, has been granted permission from the US federal government to land a spacecraft on the Moon. If successful this would be the fourth entity, after the US, Chinese, and USSR federal space agencies, to soft-land on the Moon. Jade Rabbit goes to sleepChina's lunar rover, known as Jade Rabbit, has ended its 31 month lunar exploration with the message: This time it really is goodnight. There are still many questions I would like answers to, but I'm the rabbit that has seen the most stars. The Moon has prepared a long dream for me, I don't know what it will be like - will I be a Mars explorer, or be sent back to Earth? China's space agency has confirmed the rover has shut down permanently. FROM THE DIVISIONS

GSA EVENTSDiscover Volcanism - Hawaii field trip: 11-19 February 2017.See amazing volcanism first-hand and explore the active volcanoes of Hawaii for a week with a group of like-minded geoscience enthusiasts. The eight day Discover Volcanism trip is based in Hilo, Hawaii and takes the group though the basics of Plate Tectonics, hot-spot volcanism, volcano life cycles, volcanic products and more. Collect data, samples and learn how to develop scientific field notes and map in the field and in a lava cave. Participants also visit an active volcano observatory, a tea farm and winery, historical parks and learn about local traditions and culture that has developed through living with the hazards of volcanic activity. Also examine examples of engineering solutions to some unusual hazard problems in Hawaii. There is even time to walk on a black and green sand beach, swim in volcanically heated hot pools and snorkel on a coral reef with turtles and dolphins (if they appear). Woolshed Creek fossils visible againThe Woolshed Creek fossil site near Canberra Airport has been inaccessible due to road works for over a year and was left cut-off from access at completion of the works. A pathway to reconnect the site with the nearest parking place is still a work in progress. However, the good news is that a fossil display unit has been installed in the last month to show visitors what the Silurian brachiopods, Atrypa duntroonensis, discovered by the Rev. William B. Clarke in 1844 actually look like. The site restoration is being undertaken with the support of an ACT Government heritage grant and Roads ACT. Image courtesy of Doug Finlayson. IN THE NEWSPacific ocean basin formation explainedNew research has revealed that an unstable triple junction caused the plate reorganisation which gave rise to the Pacific. A lot more complex than originally thought, the process ultimately resulted in the formation of a stable triangular three-ridge system from which the Pacific Plate formed. Fact meets fiction in ChinaAn ancient megaflood has been identified in Chinese deposits dating to about 1,900 BC. Researchers think this may be a match for the mythical deluge from the flooding Yellow River that, according to legend, Emperor Yu tamed at the start of the Xia dynasty and Chinese civilisation. ON THE WEBRenewable resources mapped in NSWThe Geological Survey of New South Wales has recently released the first comprehensive statewide renewable energy resource map, documenting the state's resource potential and existing infrastructure for solar, wind, geothermal, bioenergy, hydro and ocean resources. Its aim is to foster a more specific geographic focus on renewable energy opportunities by helping to industry to identify areas that have the greatest potential. The map also provides the most comprehensive database for existing renewable energy projects over 100 kilowatts. An unlikely outreach group sings about Space and Earth ScienceThe Amoeba People are a quirky vocal group writing and performing songs to promote Earth and Space Sciences. As unlikely as it sounds the group is proving a hit with audiences and is successfully introducing scientific content to undergraduate classes. The 35th IGC is almost hereIf you are still thinking of going to the 35th IGC in Cape Town maybe this will convince you! The program is impressive.
IN THE MEDIADrilling starts in QueenslandGeoscience Australia, the Geological Survey of New South Wales and the Geological Survey of Queensland are undertaking a collaborative project in the Southern Thomson region of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland. This includes a program of stratigraphic drilling with up to 19 boreholes to commence this month in southern Queensland. Mobile phone alert false alarmRecently, the Japanese Meteorological Agency sent an incorrect alert indicating a magnitude 9.1 earthquake had struck the Tokyo area. Even though it was cancelled almost immediately the alert made it through to some mobile phones. A lightning strike near a seismometer is being blamed for the false alarm that momentarily caused panic and disrupted some train services in the great Tokyo area. Visit Antarctica - you know you want to!

The program features workshops and a mix of speakers from academia, geological surveys and industry, and will emphasise the practical applications of research outcomes related to ore-deposit formation and exploration. Komatiite-hosted deposits, PGE-rich disseminated sulfide deposits and non-conventional polymetallic Ni(-PGE) ores from around the world are represented. A post-conference field trip focuses on komatiites, nickel deposits and associated volcanic stratigraphy of the Kalgoorlie Terrane, Yilgarn Craton.
