Ebola now impacting gold, iron and aluminium mining as well as off-shore oil drilling

Gold mining operations in West and Central Africa are facing difficulties due to the ongoing Ebola emergency amidst safety concerns for their work forces. Iron ore and aluminium producers are in a similar situation. In addition, Exxonmobil has recently announced it is postponing operations off the coast of Liberia for the same reason.

Rock art revelations

Rock art found in caves on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi have been dated at 40,000 years old. Previously, the oldest rock art, from Spain, was dated at about 41,000 years old. These new finds indicate the development of cave painting culture was not exclusively a European phenomenon or that dispersal of this culture is much older than previously thought.

Drone images from hell

The lava erupting along a near Iceland's Bárðarbunga volcano has been captured on film by a drone that flew so close bits of it melted and the camera and navigation systems failed. Fortunately it returned to base in fail-safe mode and the camera memory card survived to reveal some very impressive footage.

Mars: The field trip continued ...

This image shows the first sample-collection hole drilled in Mount Sharp. The powder is temporarily held within the sample-handling mechanism on the rover's arm and then transferred into a scoop on the rover's arm. In the open scoop, the powder's texture can be evaluated to ensure it is safe to be sieved and sampled for analysis.
