NEWSBREAKERS

Expect more magnitude 9+ earthquakes!

Research since the 2004 magnitude 9.3 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake and the 2011 magnitude 9 Tohoku earthquake suggests all past methodologies failed to predict the strength of these earthquakes and a new approach is needed. A new method developed recently can calculate the probability of stronger earthquakes above magnitude 8. It suggests Pacific subduction zones will experience a magnitude 8.5 earthquake within 250 years, a magnitude 8.8 within 500 years, and a magnitude 9 or greater within 10,000 years.

National Rock Garden News

The National Rock Garden has received its first Rock Sponsor donation - a substantial donation of $20,000 to assist with the acquisition, transportation and preparation of a large granite tor from the Monaro region of southern NSW.

In other news, Doug Finlayson, a foundation Director, and driving force behind the early stages of the project, has stepped down. In his place are two new Directors - Mike Smith and John Bain, both existing members of the NRG Steering Committee. Doug is thanked for his enormous contributions, including editorship of the Newsletter; he will be sorely missed.

The latest issue of the newsletter, including notes of the rock of the month is available here. Find information about the development of the master plan here.

Plate Tectonics on Europa?

Jupiter's moon Europa may have an active system of tectonics plates, with the surface constantly worked by plate motions. Mapping of the surface features has revealed structures comparable with spreading centres and subduction-like convergent zones.

Mount Mayon rumbles again

Mount Mayon, an active volcano in the central Philippines, appears to be close to eruption. The area has been put on alert level three by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. There is increased volcanic activity including a growing lava dome, crater glow, rock fall events, volcanic earthquakes and gas emissions.

Landing site chosen

The Rosetta probe will launch its robot lander, Philae, towards Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in a one-off landing attempt on 11 November. The probe will deploy screws and harpoons in an effort to lock itself down to the surface after it matches the movements of the comet.

Iceland fissure eruption

Iceland's Bárðarbunga volcano as imaged on September 16, 2014. The lava flow is hot enough to glow in near-infrared light, so it appears red in the image, which displays near-infrared, red, and green wavelengths as red, green, and blue respectively.
