Ebola impacts copper transport

In an attempt to limit the spread of Ebola, Botswana has barred all entry from the Democratic Republic of Congo - the sixth-largest producer of copper in the world. This has stranded more than 100 trucks carrying copper to South Africa at a border crossing.

Fissure opens in Iceland

Weeks of earthquakes have culminated in lava erupting along a 1.5 km fissure about 4.5 km from the ice margin near Iceland's Bárðarbunga volcano. Hundreds of minor earthquakes along the dyke are still occurring signalling the prospect of further eruptions or subglacial intrusions causing ash falls and flooding respectively.

Sliding rock puzzle solved

How rocks that appear to move across Racetrack Playa in Death Valley, California, and leave distinct trails as they do has been a mystery until now. Recently the rocks have been observed moving thanks to sheets of ice on windy, sunny days.

14th index of airborne geophysical surveys now available

Geoscience Australia has released the latest of 1085 airborne geophysical surveys conducted by or for the Australian, State and Territory governments. They comprise more than 34 million line kilometres of mainly total magnetic intensity and gamma-ray spectrometric data. Land elevation data derived from GPS recordings made during airborne magnetic and gamma-ray spectrometric surveys, and electromagnetic data are also available for some areas. The index if free for download at Geoscience Australia.

Rabaul covered in ash again

ASh over Rabaul

Mount Tavurvur, near Rabaul on the island of New Britain, recently erupted again but only caused minor damage as it spread ash across the region. In this Landsat 8 image, grey ash can be seen covering the landscape. Unaffected forest areas are green.

Sinkhole damage a museum attraction

In February this year GEOZ 85 reported the loss of eight corvettes after a sinkhole opened up under the national corvette museum in Kentucky, USA. All eight vehicles have been recovered but five of them are too badly damaged to repair. However, the up-side is that the damaged vehicles represent a unique event and as a result are a tourist attraction in their own right. The sinkhole also proved a tourist attraction but cost and safety concerns won the day. The hole will be totally filled in and the museum completely rebuilt.

... and speaking of Antarctica:

Satellite data reveals the sea surface around Antarctica has risen by around eight centimetres between 1992 and 2011. This is about 2 centimetres more than the global average and points to an accelerating discharge of meltwater from the Antarctic Ice Sheet.
