Earthquakes can trigger icequakes

New research indicates clusters of Antarctic icequakes, generated when glaciers calve or crevasses open, follow large earthquakes in South America. Using data from the the 2010 Magnitude 8.8 Maule earthquake in Chile the work shows small icequakes were triggered by the Rayleigh waves passing through the ice.

Landslide in Japan causes chaos

A parking lot in Japan's Tokushima Prefecture collapsed down the side of a hill recently. There was one death reported and many people were stranded as cars and buses fell into the ravine. The landslide followed weeks of heavy rain resulting in the region's wettest August and second-wettest month since records began in 1978.

The geochemistry of terroir quantified

The chemistry of wines, as shown by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, is now being used to generate regional and subregional profiles that allow different growing regions to be quantified. This in turn removes the subjectivity of taste tests and allows the industry to more effectively confront fraud.

Dinosaur extinction a bit of bad luck

Some dinosaur species were already in decline when an asteroid impact ensured the group, other than some of those already birds, went to extinction. New research into the pre-impact decline suggests that overall the group was not in decline and would have survived the impact had it occurred earlier.

New facilities at JCU

A new geologic clean laboratory has opened at James Cook University (JCU). The particle-controlled environment will be used to prepare samples for analysis on the Neptune multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS) housed in the JCU advanced analytical centre. Also at JCU, thanks to Australian Research Council and University research funding, a new experimental petrology facility has been installed. It includes a new piston cylinder press capable of applying pressures in excess of 3.5 GPa and over 1600°C to geological materials.

Geotourism focuses on fossils in the Edicaran

Geotourism in the outback Flinders Ranges has taken a big step forwards with the training of ten locals in palaeontology and communication. The project capitalises on the passion and enthusiasm the people who live in the region and takes advantage of the fact that many already offer guided tours of their properties.
