NEWSBREAKERSCompound interest earns evolutionary respectA new study into the so called Cambrian evolutionary explosion demonstrates that moderately accelerated evolution, sustained over a few tens of millions of years, could have produced a five-fold increase in the rate of evolution. This effectively would compress about 100 million years' evolution into about 20 million years. It convincingly explains how the apparent explosion of new forms arose through conventional natural selection processes. Exceeding expectations!Voyager 1, launched on a 4-year mission to Saturn in 1977, has - as of August 25 2013 - officially left the solar system for interstellar space and after 36 years is still sending data home. Voyager 2 is not far behind! FROM THE DIVISIONS

The National Rock Garden invites GSA members and friends to the inauguration of the Federation Rock DisplayAt 10.30 am on Sunday 20 October, 2013, the ACT Chief Minister will be the principal guest at the inauguration of the Federation Rock Display at the National Rock Garden off Lady Denman Drive at the western end of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra (Cnr of Barrenjoey and Lady Denman Drives). The inauguration will include the unveiling of the Federation Rocks from the eight States and Territories of the Commonwealth, some of them quite spectacular. Three of the rocks (Victoria, NSW and Tasmania) have already arrived in Canberra. It is also expected that the proposed landscape design for the National Rock Garden will be made public.
Some volunteers are required to prepare the site and help on the day. Those willing and able to assist on the 20th October (or beforehand) please send an email to: Doug Finlayson doug.finlayson@netspeed.com.au National Rock Garden facebook is live. Stay up to date with the latest NRG news by liking the facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/National-Rock-Garden/509206615828657?ref=hl The National Rock Garden will have up to 100 large specimens of the country's most iconic rocks. Each specimen will weigh approximately 10-15 tonnes. To find out how you can contribute follow this link to the NRG web site: http://www.nationalrockgarden.org.au/ The National Rock Garden (NRG) qualifies for Deductible Gift Recipient status (DGR). In other words, donations to the NRG are tax deductible so now donating to the NRG can be a win-win! IN THE NEWSBigger than Olympus Mons?New mapping of the Shatsky Rise, about 1,600 kilometres east of Japan, has revealed a volcanic edifice known as the Tamu Massif. It is a single shield volcano rising around 3.5 kilometres above the sea floor and is the largest known volcano on planet Earth. It covers a similar area to Olympus Mons on Mars but falls short of the title of largest volcano in the solar system since Olympus Mons is more than 20 kilometres in height and has a bigger volume. All in the the familyA new exhibition at the Australian Museum, Sydney, features Tyrannosaur fossil specimens from China and North America never before seen in Australia. T.rex may be the famous member of the family but there are many others featured in this family event! The augmented reality exhibition, including hands-on and multimedia experiences, is certain to be a big hit with children and adults alike. ON THE WEBAncient forest under threat
The oldest terrestrial animal from Gondwana has been unearthed from Devonian strata in South Africa. The fossilised scorpion, Gondwanascorpio emzantsiensis, provides evidence of both the terrestrial predator and its prey in Gondwana for the first time despite a diverse terrestrial fauna being known from the late Silurian of Laurasia.
IN THE MEDIANot welding meltingResearch on eruption products from Yellowstone super volcano have revealed some pyroclastic deposits underwent melting and flowed like lava before cooling. To explain this behaviour researchers have invoked a viscous heating mechanism. Fast travelling hot ash from a mega eruption can apparently generate enough heat through its movement across the ground to raise the internal temperature to a point where materials melt and the pyroclastic flow begins to flow as a hot liquid. ... and speaking of pyroclastics Atlas holds Australia highThe newly released Geoscience Australia product, Deep Crustal Seismic Reflection Profiling Australia 1978-2011, is a new atlas allowing views into the variations in crustal architecture across a variety of geological domains. The compilation includes a number of large-scale reflection transects groups of 1000 kilometres or more which link across major geological provinces, and an extensive bibliography of reports and relevant publications. ... and more from Geoscience Australia: Mars: the field trip continued
