Compound interest earns evolutionary respect

A new study into the so called Cambrian evolutionary explosion demonstrates that moderately accelerated evolution, sustained over a few tens of millions of years, could have produced a five-fold increase in the rate of evolution. This effectively would compress about 100 million years' evolution into about 20 million years. It convincingly explains how the apparent explosion of new forms arose through conventional natural selection processes.

Exceeding expectations!

Voyager 1, launched on a 4-year mission to Saturn in 1977, has - as of August 25 2013 - officially left the solar system for interstellar space and after 36 years is still sending data home. Voyager 2 is not far behind!

Bigger than Olympus Mons?

New mapping of the Shatsky Rise, about 1,600 kilometres east of Japan, has revealed a volcanic edifice known as the Tamu Massif. It is a single shield volcano rising around 3.5 kilometres above the sea floor and is the largest known volcano on planet Earth. It covers a similar area to Olympus Mons on Mars but falls short of the title of largest volcano in the solar system since Olympus Mons is more than 20 kilometres in height and has a bigger volume.

All in the the family

A new exhibition at the Australian Museum, Sydney, features Tyrannosaur fossil specimens from China and North America never before seen in Australia. T.rex may be the famous member of the family but there are many others featured in this family event! The augmented reality exhibition, including hands-on and multimedia experiences, is certain to be a big hit with children and adults alike.

Ancient forest under threat

Lava flow from space

The Kahauale'a 2 lava flow from Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano is encroaching on ohia lehua forest. This ancient forest, between 200 to 750 years old, is close to the Pu'u 'O'o eruption center but most flows move south towards the ocean. Unfortunately, this flow is moving north towards the interior of Hawaii and the forest.

Oldest Gondwanan had a sting in its tail

The oldest terrestrial animal from Gondwana has been unearthed from Devonian strata in South Africa. The fossilised scorpion, Gondwanascorpio emzantsiensis, provides evidence of both the terrestrial predator and its prey in Gondwana for the first time despite a diverse terrestrial fauna being known from the late Silurian of Laurasia.

Not welding melting

Research on eruption products from Yellowstone super volcano have revealed some pyroclastic deposits underwent melting and flowed like lava before cooling. To explain this behaviour researchers have invoked a viscous heating mechanism. Fast travelling hot ash from a mega eruption can apparently generate enough heat through its movement across the ground to raise the internal temperature to a point where materials melt and the pyroclastic flow begins to flow as a hot liquid.
