The National Rock Garden - ANU dig it!

The Australian National University (ANU) has partnered with the Geological Society of Australia to help establish the National Rock Garden (NRG) in Canberra which will be situated on a six-hectare site adjacent to the Lindsay Pryor National Arboretum and across the road from the National Arboretum Canberra. ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Young signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the NRG and announced $100,000 funding towards the project.

Pictured are Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Young and Chair of the National Rock Garden Professor Brad Pillans signing the MOU. Read more here: http://bit.ly/17fyeCd

The NRG will have up to 100 large specimens of the country's most iconic rocks. Each specimen will weigh approximately 10–15 tonnes. The NRG qualifies for Deductible Gift Recipient status (DGR) meaning donations to the NRG are tax deductible. To find out how you can contribute follow this link to the NRG web site: http://www.nationalrockgarden.org.au/.

If you would like to join the Friends of the National Rock Garden and receive newsletters and information directly by email please send a request to rockgarden@gsa.org.au

Geelong rattled by shallow quake

A shallow magnitude-3 earthquake rattled the Geelong region last week but no damage was recorded. A large number of people felt the event because it was so shallow but earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon in the greater Melbourne region.

GSA Annual General Meeting, Brisbane Tuesday 13 August 2013

Prior to the AGM all financial members of the GSA will receive ballot papers to vote on changes to the GSA Constitution (Society Rules). Changes to the GSA constitution are designed to bring the GSA in-line with modern Constitutions and include:

  •  clearly defined Definitions and Interpretations;
  •  Objects of the Society;
  •  improved equity into the area of Discipline timing and standards;
  •  provisions to utilise technology opportunities and transparency in relation to meetings,
     notifications, electronically transmitted signatures and the opportunity to approve resolutions
     circulated to the members of the committee;
  •  clarification of membership criteria and categories;
  •  improved member rights;
  •  clarification of the delegation of powers to committees including Divisions, Branches
     and Specialist Groups;
  •  transparent voting process to ensure Divisions are represented on the Governing Council;
  •  inclusion of Post-nominals;
  •  standardised terminology so the GSA rules comply with all legal requirements in Australia,
     including new legislation passed in Dec 2012 governing the not-for-profit sector;
  •  an Indemnity clause for the Governing Councillors;
  •  transitioning to the Governing Council and
  •  provision for streamlining the current process for consolidating the accounts

The constitutional changes have been approved by the GSA Executive Committee and supported by the Divisions, Branches and Specialist Groups. The proposed new constitution will be made available to all members in July with a deadline to lodge a vote for or against, prior to the AGM. Members can vote directly by attending the AGM, or alternatively lodge a proxy vote by post with the Chairman of the meeting, or with another member who will be attending the AGM. Approval of the new constitution will require 75% approval from those members casting a vote.

A meteor shower but not as we know it

ISON seen by Hubble

Comet ISON is heading our way and promises a bright show when it enters our region this November. Analysis of its dust trail also suggests it could generate an unusual meteor shower when Earth passes through the trail in early January 2014. Unfortunately this will not be a spectacular light show, rather an invisible rain of very fine comet dust will settle down through the atmosphere over months or even years.

Louisiana pays a price

The Louisiana Science Education Act allows teachers to use materials in the classroom that are critical of established scientific theories and has been widely condemned as a tool for allowing creationism to be taught. Evidence is now emerging that the state is paying a high economic price as a consequence, losing large science conferences, losing key personnel moving away and losing potential students that are now looking elsewhere to study.

Toba no disaster for humans

The eruption of Mt Toba 75,000 years ago may have been catastrophic for people living nearby but does not appear to have been a global disaster leading to a genetic bottleneck. Volcanic glass ash-fall from the Toba event has been identified in Lake Malawi in east Africa but does not correlate with lacustrine records of climate change.

Core hotter that previously thought

New experimental x-ray measurements suggest iron in the Earth's inner core melts at about 6,000oC, as hot as the Sun's surface and about 1000oC higher than previously thought.

Petroglyphys slow to fade in Western Australia

Research into the erosion rates of Pilbara rocks has put an upper limit on the possible age ancient Aboriginal engravings in the Burrup Peninsula of Western Australia. The hard rock used in the carvings and low rainfall in the region suggests the carvings could persist for 60,000 years although there is no suggestion at this stage that people arrived any later than 35,000 and 42,000 years ago.
