Comet on course for Mars meeting

Comet 2013 A1 will pass very close to Mars during October of 2014. There is a small but real possibility the 1-3km wide core of the projectile could impact Mars but it seems certain it will at least approach within 300,000 km of the planet. That means Mars could find itself inside the comet's gassy, dusty atmosphere, creating challenging conditions for robotic missions on Mars even if an impact does not occur.

The National Rock Garden - a rock solid idea

Three Sisters

The National Rock Garden (NRG) now qualifies for Deductible Gift Recipient status (DGR). In other words, donations to the NRG are now tax deductible so now donating to the NRG can be a win-win!

The National Rock Garden will have up to 100 large specimens of the country's most iconic rocks. Each specimen will weigh approximately 10–15 tonnes. To find out how you can contribute follow this link to the NRG web site: http://www.nationalrockgarden.org.au/

This months rock of the month is the Boogardie orbicular granite deposit is located 35 km west of Mount Magnet in Western Australia. This unusual granitic rock, located on Boogardie Station, is one of a few orbicular granite localities known worldwide.

If you would like to join the Friends of the National Rock Garden and receive newsletters and information directly by email please send a request to rockgarden@gsa.org.au

Rock face challenge on Facebook

Three Sisters

If you visited the GSA facebook page in March you would have seen this outcrop image posted by Gary Lewis and read the dialogue as members and friends tried to guess the geological story and location of the image. The hint provided was: Close to the base of a large basin and to EarthCache 1.

Want to rise to the next challenge or challenge others to rise to yours?

The GSA facebook page welcomes interesting outcrop images from our members.

IN THE NEWStop

Blame volcanoes for the dinosaurs!

Improved zircon uranium-lead dating has possibly establish a causal link between a series of mega-eruptions and the end-Triassic-extinction event. Flood basalt volcanism within the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province now appears to be synchronous with the extinction event. The scale of the eruptions was sufficient to cause substantial climate disruption but this is the first time their timing has been shown to coincide.

Miocene fish found in Kenya

Well preserved Miocene fish fossils may not only shed light on the evolutionary history of freshwater fish in East Africa but also provide insights into the ecological and climatic conditions that prevailed in the region at that time. The data from these finds will improve what is known of the transformation from woodland to savannah in the East African rift valley, a process that is thought to have favoured the diversification of hominids.

One core a story does not make

Climate research using cores from Madagascan coral colonies located 700 metres apart has revealed massive data variations between colonies. In one core, increasing sea surface temperature was accompanied by increasing growth rate and increasing Sr/Ca (normally associated with cooling), while in the other, the opposite was found. This research reveals the importance of multiple sampling sites and the need to avoid drawing conclusions about climate from small data sets.

Asteroid or Comet?

Whether an asteroid or a comet, the object that generated the 180km-wide Chicxulub crater still directly or indirectly caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and many other species 65 million years ago. That has not stopped scientists debating the nature of the object with recent geochemical studies suggesting the object may have been a comet, somewhat smaller than an asteroid thought by many to be the likely culprit.

Geoscientist Employment Survey

In 2008 the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) commenced a series of surveys to monitor the impact of the global economic downturn on geoscientist employment throughout Australia. These surveys provided valuable data that was used by AIG in conjunction with other industry groups to track the impact of the downturn in exploration and mining geoscience employment, and the subsequent recovery of employment as economic conditions improved. The survey only takes a few minutes to complete. No personally identifiable information is collected. A few minutes of your time can help make a real contribution to your profession. Click the link to complete the 2013 survey anytime during April.
