Gold formation theory shakes things up

New Australian research suggests much of the world's gold deposits may have formed during earthquakes from gold-rich solutions. The work suggests sudden increases in fracture volumes cause flash vaporisation and a change in fluid pressure with rapid precipitation of gold from solution.

The National Rock Garden - a rock solid idea

State Circle view

The National Rock Garden (NRG) now qualifies for Deductible Gift Recipient status (DGR). In other words, donations to the NRG are now tax deductible so now donating to the NRG can be a win-win!

The National Rock Garden will have up to 100 large specimens of the country's most iconic rocks. Each specimen will weigh approximately 10–15 tonnes. To find out how you can contribute follow this link to the NRG web site: http://www.nationalrockgarden.org.au/

This months rock of the month is the Boogardie orbicular granite deposit is located 35 km west of Mount Magnet in Western Australia. This unusual granitic rock, located on Boogardie Station, is one of a few orbicular granite localities known worldwide.

If you would like to join the Friends of the National Rock Garden and receive newsletters and information directly by email please send a request to rockgarden@gsa.org.au

Cambrian worm farm

A new fossil enteropneust (acorn worm), Spartobranchus tenuis, from the Burgess Shale has extended the record of these worms from the late Triassic back to the Cambrian. Research suggests this new species is an evolutionary link between two distinct living groups of animals, the enteropneusts and the pterobranchs, and suggests that all hemichordates evolved during the Cambrian explosion.

Organic mud a girl's best friend?

Australian research has found evidence to suggest eclogitic diamonds originate as organic matter on the ocean floor which has been subducted into the mantle where the carbon has entered the diamond stability field.

Fossil Fun for the whole family

Kronosaurus korner, Richmond Queensland, is running some great fossil dig experiences for the whole family in coming months with one day and multiple day events to choose from. Staff at the museum plan to use some of the events to enable extraction of skeletal remains of a marine reptile and large fish that have been recently discovered.

Seafloor up for grabs?

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea an autonomous body known as the International Seabed Authority can issue mining licences for the seabed in international waters. Since 2001 13 15-year licences have been issued and more are in progress. Concerns are now being raised for the long term protection of unique ecosystems that inhabit areas around hydrothermal vents likely to be targeted by exploration and mining.

Volcanoes as environmental heroes?

Research into a slow down in global warming between 2000 and 2010 suggests it may have been due to increased sulfur dioxide emissions from small to medium sized volcanoes rather than any reduction in industrial greenhouse gas emissions or increases in industrial sulfur dioxide emissions.

Test drill results at John Klein

Image: An analysis of a drilled rock sample from NASA's Curiosity rover shows the presence of water, carbon dioxide, oxygen, sulfur dioxide, and hydrogen sulphide released on heating. The results analysing the high temperature water release are consistent with smectite clay minerals.
