Major Earthquake and Tsunami for the Solomon Islands

A magnitude 8.0 earthquake centred near the Santa Cruz islands, part of the Solomon Islands nation, shook the region on Wednesday February 6. It was followed by several aftershocks, the largest measuring magnitude 6.4. A tsunami warning was issued and although a small tsunami was recorded locally a pacific-wide alert was cancelled.

There's bacteria in them thar hills!

The bacteria Delftia acidovorans is frequently found on the surface of gold nuggets and has been suspected of being the agent responsible of generating solid gold from gold in solution within the regolith. Research has confirmed the bacteria secrete a metabolite that protects against gold toxicity and also causes gold biomineralisation.

Gulp!

A massive sinkhole in Guangzhou,China, was caught on video recently as it 'swallowed' several buildings. Subway construction rather than geological processes seems to be the cause.

Not exactly Flipper

Resting for over 100 years in a Scottish museum the partial skeleton of a dolphin-like crocodile has been unearthed and identified. The Jurassic species, Tyrannoneustes lythrodectikos, was a large marine predator that may provide a link between small marine crocodiles and other much larger marine carnivores.

Richard the Third: no bones about it!

Skeletal remains found under a car park in Leicester, once the site of Greyfriars church, have been confirmed by DNA, C-14 and other evidence as those of Richard III. The bones not only confirm the king died a violent death but that he also had a curved spine. There is no evidence in the bones of a withered arm. Facial reconstruction techniques have also confirmed features shown in portraits of Richard III painted after his death.

The wet and the dry of it

Flooding in the Ftizroy River

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite captured flooding in the Fitzroy River on January 30 2013. The image uses a combination of visible and infrared light to better distinguish between water and land. Water varies in colour from electric blue to navy. Vegetation is bright green and bare ground is earth-toned. See the web site for a 'before' image taken January 17 2013.
