NEWSBREAKERSMount Fuji causes concern
In 2011 a magnitude-6.2 earthquake occurred directly under Mount Fuji shortly after the 9.0-magnitude earthquake off Japan's north-east that caused the tsunami disaster. Since then intense monitoring has revealed increasing magma chamber pressure raising concerns that an eruption may by imminent. Mount Fuji has not erupted for 300 years but historically it erupts roughly every 30 years, adding to the concerns since it last erupted less than two months after a large earthquake.
Earth Science Week puts careers in focus
Australia's Earth Science Week celebrations from 14 - 20 October 2012 focus on the theme of Discovering careers in Earth Sciences. Despite impressive stabbing canines that earned it the title of 'vampire' tooth wear and other evidence suggests that the South African heterodontosaurid dinosaur, Pegomastax africanus, was a herbivore. Adding to the oddness of this cat-sized reptile is the covering of stiff bristles it also sported. Giant's Causeway not a mythIn the myth, the Giant's Causeway in Ireland was built by the giant Fionn McCool. Today the impressive array of over 40,000 interlocking basalt columns is a UNESCO World Heritage Site complete with an interpretive centre. The centre recently revised its interpretive materials in response to criticism that it gave weight to creationist views that the site was less than 6,000 years old while failing to provide appropriate scientific information on the age of the 60 million year old site. Shiveluch caught in the actSatellite images taken two hours apart show a new eruption from Shiveluch Volcano on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. IN THE MEDIAIron man Buddha a spacefarer A Buddhist sculpture, known as the iron man, has an elemental analysis that indicates it is carved from an ataxitic iron meteorite with high Nickel and Cobalt content. Researchers have concluded the geochemical data most likely matches fragments of the Chinga ataxite meteorite strewn field discovered in 1913. Publishing food for thoughtA study of the manuscript submission and rejection process for biologically based papers submitted to journals for publication found that papers resubmitted and accepted by one journal after being rejected by another, receive more citations than other papers. No doubt authors in other disciplines, including the geosciences, are now wondering if it applies to their field as well. Mars: the field trip (continued)
