Gaol a prospect for Italian geologists

Geologists who held a public meeting in an Italian town to discuss the prospects of dangerous local earthquakes occurring just six days before a major earthquake in 2009 that killed 309 people have been charged with manslaughter. As the trial opened prosecutors called for the scientists to be gaoled for four years each for allegedly failing to give adequate warning.

Landslide blog puts New Zealand on notice

Actively deforming steep rock slopes, many of which can be found in tectonically active New Zealand, present an ongoing threat and management problem for New Zealand authorities. The challenge is to identify those slopes that are likely to collapse from amongst the many that probably won't.

A bright reason to travel north

Recently discovered comet C/2012S1, potentially one of the brightest comets ever detected, will be easily visible in the northern hemisphere for several months in 2013. Unfortunately, residents south of the equator may only get a glimpse of its tail. If the comet lives up to expectations it could be almost as bright as the moon for several months.
