NEWSBREAKERSPopocatepetl has locals rattledNorth America's second highest volcano, Popocatepetl, has been ramping up activity in the last few weeks, leaving locals unnerved as ash-falls close the airport and fears of devastating lahars are raised. Mexico's disaster centre has raised the volcano's alert level to yellow phase three, the third-highest warning on their seven-step scale.

Results from the Dawn mission to asteroid Vesta suggest Vesta is a rocky protoplanet, complete with a layered interior and metal rich core, just like the rocky planets. Hogs do float!
A Harley-Davidson motorcycle that was swept out to sea inside a storage container in the 2011 Japanese tsunami has been found on a Canadian shoreline. The Japanese owner, who lost his home and three family members in the tsunami, has been located alive and the store that sold him the bike has offered to restore it. ON THE WEBThe Highs and Lows of a submarine volcano
A bathymetric survey of Monowai submarine volcano in the Tonga-Kermadec Arc, twice in 14 days, has revealed an increase in seafloor depth of up to 18.8 metres and a decrease in depth up to 71.9 metres. Researchers hypothesise this variation represents collapse of the volcano summit, the growth of new lava cones and the emplacement of debris flows. Giant shaker table on show
A building-sized shaker table, complete with a mock hospital, with a surgery and an intensive-care unit, computer servers and other electrical equipment, as well as stairs and a working lift, has been put through its paces in California. The facility was designed to test if hospitals, or other infrastructure such as major computer servers, built on rubber bearings could function after an earthquake. The good news is that even after a simulated 8.8 magnitude earthquake the rubber bearings protected the infrastructure and 'saved patients lives' in the hospital.
IN THE MEDIAFlatulence did it!
Mesozoic global warming might be down to the gut flora of herbivorous dinosaurs. Using the flatulence of horses as a model, researchers estimate that the total population of dinosaurs, produced 520 million tonnes of gas annually. That's enough methane (and other gases) to make you catch your breath, and warm the planet. Martian dune migration rates measured
In this perspective view of the Nili Patera dune field, a HiRISE image has been draped over a digital elevation model of Mars. Colours correspond to the amplitude of the ripple's displacement extracted by image correlation between two HiRISE observations separated by 105 days. Cool colours (blue) correspond to less than 75 cm of displacement whereas warm colours (red) correspond to 4.5+ meters.
