NEWSBREAKERSIcy view of EarthLess than two years after the launch of Europe's Cryosat mission, mapping of Arctic sea ice with high precision, it is delivering a detailed view of the seasonal growth and retreat of Arctic sea ice as well as enabling calculation of the actual ice volume. Water mining?A new Africa-wide analysis of groundwater resources has mapped the amount and potential yield of available groundwater. Many countries currently designated as water-scarce have substantial groundwater reserves and are now in a position to better understand how they can be utilised. However, existing aquifers are depleted by drought, and scientists are worried that large-scale developments could rapidly deplete the resource.

The National Rock Garden, launched at the 2010 Australian Earth Sciences Convention in
Canberra, will have up to 100 large specimens of the country's most iconic rocks,
each weighing approximately 10–15 tonnes. To find out how you can contribute follow

Residents of Los Angeles and surrounds could get a 45 second-plus warning of a major earthquake, thanks to the internet and some smart software, but only if the epicentre is elsewhere on the San Andreas fault and only if they are part of the USGS trial. A distant earthquake would trigger an alarm, sending an alert to subscribers indicating that a groundswell has started and is on its way. Meanwhile NASA looks to GPS for hazard warnings
NASA is set to test a real-time network of GPS sensors that it hopes will lead to faster, more accurate earthquake analysis and tsunami warning system. ON THE WEBVesta's shape and gravity field revealed
NASA has released a video that shows the gravity field of Vesta closely matches the surface topography of the giant asteroid. Dust!
A plume of wind-blown sediments is visible down-wind of Lake Ozero Siletiteniz, near the border between Kazakhstan and Russia. It was recently lofted across the treeless plain. NASA's Cassini spacecraft has recorded kilometre-sized objects punching through parts of Saturn's F ring, leaving glittering trails, otherwise known as mini-jets, behind them. A new strategy for managing Australia's heritage is in your hands
The Australian Government is keen to receive ideas and input from the public to help develop an Australian Heritage Strategy. A public consultation paper outlining some of the key issues for heritage in Australia is available to help communities' individuals and governments frame their responses. The public consultation process closes on 15 June 2012. What's in AJESThe Australian Journal of Earth Sciences online is available through the Taylor & Francis' website: http://www.tandfonline.com/loi/taje20. It is very easy to navigate and use.
