NEWSBREAKERSCloak idea something to cling on toA new method of earthquake-resistant design using acoustic metamaterials has been proposed. In theory this 'cloak' could reduce the amplitude of a seismic wave exponentially, converting the wave into an evanescent wave and protecting buildings and other structures as a result. IN THE NEWSLiDAR spots the difference
A new mapping technique, using airborne LiDAR (light detection and
ranging) images of earthquake sites can spot surface changes of just a few centimetres.
New ways of smoking in the Philippines
Terrestrial smokers, non-marine equivalents of deep-sea black smokers, have been discovered along the banks of a crater lake inside the still active Taal Volcano in the Philippines.
ON THE WEBRussian lava dome grows
The ongoing eruption of Shiveluch volcano, in the Kamchatka area of eastern Russia, has produced many different events, the latest being the development of a significant lava dome.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory turns 100
January 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
A century of continuous observation on, it tracks the activity of Kilauea, Mauna Loa,
and other volcanoes in the Hawaiian Islands, as well as the associated earthquakes with the aim
of better predicting hazardous behaviour early enough to be of practical use to local residents.
The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA's Earth Observing-1 satellite observed the volcano on January 28, 2012. Shown here is a close-up of the Kilauea Caldera and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and within the Kilauea Caldera lies Halema´uma´u Crater. A small plume of water vapour emerges from this crater and blows toward the southwest. Image courtesy of NASA's Earth Observatory IN THE MEDIAStratigraphy prizes up for grabs
The International Commission on Stratigraphy has two awards, to be presented at the 34th International Geological Congress in Brisbane. The Digby McLaren Medal is awarded to honour a significant body of internationally important contributions to stratigraphy sustained over a number of years and the ICS Medal is awarded to honour high-quality research in stratigraphy by recognising a single major achievement in advancing stratigraphical knowledge.
Nominations for either of the awards close 30 March 2012.
Where in the world is Tinakula?
Tinakula, a tiny island in the south Pacific, is about 2300km north-east of Brisbane. It is in the media because it is also a volcano with an eruption under way.

TAG is at the printers and will hit members' mailboxes late March.
The March issue includes Part 3 of 100 years of Australian Antarctic Expeditions: The foundation laid - Mawson's Men, by Patrick Quilty. The issue also includes a focus on mapping, with a full colour feature from Brian Kennett on the AusMoho and beyond and David Branagan reports on the history of Australian mapping. As well as regular columns and news from Divisions and Specialist Groups, we recognise and celebrate members' contributions to the Earth Sciences.
