Cloak idea something to cling on to

A new method of earthquake-resistant design using acoustic metamaterials has been proposed. In theory this 'cloak' could reduce the amplitude of a seismic wave exponentially, converting the wave into an evanescent wave and protecting buildings and other structures as a result.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory turns 100

January 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. A century of continuous observation on, it tracks the activity of Kilauea, Mauna Loa, and other volcanoes in the Hawaiian Islands, as well as the associated earthquakes with the aim of better predicting hazardous behaviour early enough to be of practical use to local residents.

The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA's Earth Observing-1 satellite observed the volcano on January 28, 2012. Shown here is a close-up of the Kilauea Caldera and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and within the Kilauea Caldera lies Halema´uma´u Crater. A small plume of water vapour emerges from this crater and blows toward the southwest.

Stratigraphy prizes up for grabs

The International Commission on Stratigraphy has two awards, to be presented at the 34th International Geological Congress in Brisbane. The Digby McLaren Medal is awarded to honour a significant body of internationally important contributions to stratigraphy sustained over a number of years and the ICS Medal is awarded to honour high-quality research in stratigraphy by recognising a single major achievement in advancing stratigraphical knowledge. Nominations for either of the awards close 30 March 2012.
