Australian Earth Science Olympiad students bring home the medals

Medals!

Four students chosen to represent Australia at the 10th International Earth Science Olympiads in Japan were all smiles recently with three bronze medals and one silver medal to show for their efforts. Up against teams from 26 other countries the students completed two theory exams and five practical exams across a range of geoscience and astronomy topics to achieve their individual medals. From left to right: Winnie Yuan - Bronze, Daniel Ho - Bronze, Jeff Brown - Bronze and Catriona Illingworth - Silver.

In addition to their individual achievements Winnie was a member of the international team awarded a Silver certificate for their International Field Team Investigation oral presentation and Jeff was a member of the international team awarded a Bronze certificate for their Earth Science Poster. Jeff was also voted the Most Popular Participant by his student peers! The GSA congratulates all four students on their outstanding achievements. Photograph courtesy of Greg McNamara.

TEPO wins a Eureka Prize!

The 2016 UNSW Eureka Prize for Excellence in Interdisciplinary Scientific Research has been awarded to the Trace Elements in Past Oceans (TEPO) project. TEPO is a multidisciplinary research collaboration utilising analytical chemistry, geology, palaeontology, evolutionary biology and toxicology. The project is contributing to a step change in understanding the connections between plate tectonics, past ocean chemistry and the evolution and extinction of life on Earth.

Discover Volcanism - Hawaii field trip: 11-19 February 2017.

Look, Basalt!

See amazing volcanism first-hand and explore the active volcanoes of Hawaii for a week with a group of like-minded geoscience enthusiasts. The eight day Discover Volcanism trip is based in Hilo, Hawaii and takes the group through the basics of Plate Tectonics, hot-spot volcanism, volcano life cycles, volcanic products and more. Collect data, samples and learn how to develop scientific field notes and map in the field and in a lava cave. Participants also visit an active volcano observatory, a tea farm and winery, historical parks and learn about local traditions and culture that has developed through living with the hazards of volcanic activity. Also examine examples of engineering solutions to some unusual hazard problems in Hawaii. There is even time to walk on a black and green sand beach, swim in volcanically heated hot pools and snorkel on a coral reef with turtles and dolphins (if they appear).

The trip caters for a small number of people so that personalised learning experiences can happen for all the participants. The trip is also not overly expensive, with all the land transport, accommodation, breakfasts, some dinners, park entry fees covered. All you need to do is get to and from Hilo, Hawaii and make your field lunches and you're almost set.

Cost: US$1575 per person (not including airfares to/from Hilo, HI Twin share)
Members of the Geological Society of Australia receive a US$75 discount

For more information you can visit http://geoetc.com/hawaiifeb17/ or email Gary Lewis on gary@geoetc.com for more details.

Aftershocks continue in Italy

Not all the aftershocks in Italy are seismic. It is now known that the Magnitude 6.2 earthquake that recently devastated the region around the Italian village of Amatrice was not preceded by any frequent, low-magnitude, tremors in the surrounding area. No seismic activity was recorded before the main event. This is in stark contrast to the 2009 earthquake in nearby L'Aquila, which was preceded by numerous tremors and infamously resulted in the manslaughter trial of scientists and a public official for failing to warn the public of an imminent major earthquake. Observers are shocked by the amount of damage in the Amatrice area while the earthquake and seismic aftershocks have rekindled painful memories for the survivors of the L'Aquila event.

Digging deep in South Australia

The South Australian Geophysical Reference Model, a 3D model showing underground landscapes to a depth of 100km for all of South Australia, is now publicly available. The model allows users to access the state's vast resource data sets of geological landscapes which will in turn enable better corporate exploration programs.

A gold-mine of gravity data now accessible

Geoscience Australia has released a new nation-wide gravity data set, the result of over 400,000 gravity observations made in the last seven years by national and state agencies. In formulating the data acquisition program a gap analysis was conducted which highlighted areas with low coverage and low quality data. Targeting gaps for data acquisition under the Exploring for the Future programme has resulted in the new release being better able to assist future corporate exploration programs.

New minerals from Siberia

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been synthetically produced for some time and their open framework structures can soak up gases such as hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Until recently these materials were not known to have natural equivalents. However, the minerals stepanovite and zhemchuzhnikovite found in Siberia over 50 years ago have recently had their structures completely analysed. This has revealed that they are effectively natural MOFs.

Ancient mounds record climate history

Mound Spring core samples from north Kimberley sites may provide rock art scientists with a timeline of the region's climate history to help figure out why there was a sudden change in cave painting styles. The cores record around 15,000 years of local climate history and shows vegetation changes indicated by fossilised pollens with data from the core suggesting several changes in monsoon activity that are in turn reflected in rock art style changes.
