New AusGIN portal launched
The new Australian Geoscience Information Network (AusGIN) website has been launched by the Australian State, Territory and Commonwealth geological surveys. The completely revamped Geoscience Portal is now a state-of-the-art online mapping application that brings together geoscience spatial data from all Australian government jurisdictions. Featured datasets include boreholes, mineral occurrences, and mineral tenements from all States and the Northern Territory, and national geophysical datasets including new onshore seismic and rock properties data.

Canadian subduction zone under new watch
An improved network of seismic monitors are set to monitor the Cascadia subduction zone off British Columbia to provide crucial seconds of warning on earthquake events and resultant tsunami. Geotourism gets a boost at the AESC
Geotourism received a boost recently with a cooperation agreement signed between the Geological Society of Australia and the Geological Society of China at the Australian Earth Science Convention in Adelaide.
Contact the chair of the Geotourism Standing Committee, Angus Robinson, for more details: angus@leisuresolutions.com.au

...and speaking of geotourism:
The Geological Society of Australia has been providing advice to UNESCO about the potential for registering the Warrumbungle region as a Geopark. The Warrumbungle National Park is well known for it spectacular volcanic landforms, zeolite minerals and biodiversity. Declaring the area a UNESCO Global Geopark would put the region's geological heritage on the world map and contribute to the growth in geotourism across the country.

A nicely balanced rock and a safe-mode shut down
Curiosity snapped this shot of an area known as Murray Buttes, complete with what looks like a balancing rock, before it went into a safe-mode shutdown on Sol 1389. Preliminary information indicates an unexpected mismatch between camera software and data-processing software in the main computer. Reports indicate Curiosity is OK.
