The GSA office closes December 18 at midday ADST and reopens Monday, 4th January, 2016.

NEWSBREAKERS

Two takes on a mantle boundary

Two new studies, when taken together, provide valuable insights into why the behaviour of the mantle changes at 1000km depth but ultimately raise more questions about the nature of the mantle's viscosity and composition that need to be answered before a complete understanding of the mantle is realised.

Australian Neotectonics: New science for unconventional energy, mineral resources, groundwater, and hazard assessment

Organised by the Environmental, Engineering and Hydrogeology Specialist Group (EEHSG), this 2-day Symposium will be held from Monday 29th February to Tuesday 1st March 2016, at Geoscience Australia, Canberra and is sponsored by the Melbourne Energy Institute. Registration for the event is essential, but free! Travel grants for students wishing to participate will be considered.

This 2-day symposium will explore how an understanding of Neogene-to-Recent tectonic processes helps inform contemporary geoscience issues of seismic hazard, mineral, energy and groundwater resources and environmental management in Australia. The Symposium will focus on the potential benefit of aligning challenging contemporary problems in resource and environmental management with new ways of thinking about how subtle tectonic processes have shaped the Australian continent over the last few million years.

Over a dozen research leaders from Academia, Government and Industry have been invited to present papers, with other contributions welcomed. If interested in participating, please contact Dr Ken Lawrie (ken.lawrie@ga.gov.au; Tel. 02 62499847; Mob. 0427 434950). For those wishing to present a paper, you are invited to submit abstracts (350 word limit), with the best papers selected for oral contributions. Opportunities also exist to present poster papers. Friday 12th February 2016 is the abstract deadline.

GSA National Awards - nominations close 22 January 2016

New dinosaur from old bones

One of the best preserved armoured dinosaur fossils ever found, and the most complete ankylosaurian fossil from Gondwana, was found in north Queensland several decades ago. Formerly thought to be a new species of Australia's only armoured dinosaur genus Minmi, the specimen has now been thoroughly studied and assigned a new genus and species name, Kunbarrasaurus ieversi, making it the second the genus of armoured dinosaurs known to inhabit Australia.

Volcanic sulfur makes for brighter clouds

During the recent volcanic eruptions on Iceland the response of cloud formation to sulfur emissions could be studied. The results show that in the presence of these aerosols there is a smaller cloud droplet size, leading to brighter clouds that reflect significantly more sunlight. These results indicate volcanic aerosols affect cloud properties and thus global albedo.

New eruption in Nicaragua after over 100 years of rest

Momotombo lava flows from satellite

Nicaragua's Momotombo Volcano explosively erupted recently after last erupting in January 1905. The Advanced Land Imager on the Earth Observing-1 satellite acquired this image of the area on December 4, 2015. This false-colour image highlights hot areas, primarily the lava flow that extends to the northeast. In 1610 eruptions of Momotombo forced the complete relocation of the Spanish city of León.

Earth observer, Sentinel-2a, now live

The EU's latest Earth observer, Sentinel-2a, is now producing images that are free for download. The imaging instrument is sensitive across 13 spectral bands and each swath is 290km wide. In addition, its colour images have a resolution of 10m. Demand for the images is expected to be high but users will need plenty of storage space as even the smallest image products have large file sizes.

TAG for December 2015

The December issue is on its way.

Do you have an article or news item for the geological community? If so, make sure you meet the March issue deadline of 25 January. If you are submitting a Feature or Special Report please send your article in as soon as possible and if you need information about word lengths and submitting contact: tag@gsa.org.au.

Correction
It has been brought to my attention that the Heritage Matters update on the topic of geoparks reported in the December issue of TAG contained a number of inaccuracies. The Geotourism Standing Committee, which has been carefully managing the development of geotourism, geotrails and geoparks in Australia, will be providing a comprehensive update on recent developments in the March issue - this will include a report on the UNESCO decision in November relating to global geoparks. Since its establishment a year ago, the Geotourism Standing Committee has been carefully nurturing the development of geotourism in close consultation with the GSA Governing Council, and recently with the Australian Geoscience Council.
