New microplate dates the Himalayas

The first ancient Indian Ocean microplate to be discovered has been named the Mammerickx Microplate, after Dr Jacqueline Mammerickx, a pioneer in seafloor mapping. The team of Australian and US scientists that made the discovery postulate the microplate's formation provides a precise means of dating the onset of the India-Eurasia collision to 47 million years ago.

IN THE NEWStop

Long buried but still visible

Radar images of Mauritanian Western Sahara taken from a Japanese Earth observation satellite have revealed an ancient 500km long river system buried beneath shallow cover. It is thought the river carried water to the sea during wetter periods in the region over the past 245,000 years and perhaps as recently as 5,000 years ago.

Another glacier on the run

Greenland's Zachariae Isstrom glacier has entered a phase of accelerated retreat. The glacier represents about 5% percent of the Greenland Ice Sheet and once fully melted will raise global sea level by more than 46 centimetres. The glacier is now breaking up and calving high volumes of icebergs into the ocean which will result in rising sea levels for decades to come.

Understanding planets better with a 3D printer

3D models of impact craters on the Moon and Mars, as well as of Mars's Valles Marineris canyon have recently been showcased at the annual Geological Society of America conference. Researchers and teachers using the models say they reveal features not easily visualised any other way and are an excellent engagement tool for use with students. http://tinyurl.com/oyu7p7r

Ice volcanoes on Pluto?

Pluto volcano image

Images returning from the New Horizons fly-by of Pluto suggest two volcanoes may be present near Pluto's South Pole. One volcano-like peak, Wright Mons, is 3-5 kilometres high, whereas the other, Piccard Mons, is up to 6 kilometres high. They resemble icy cryovolcanoes seen elsewhere in the solar system.

Predicting volcanic eruptions on Earth

Near Naples, Italy, a caldera known as Campi Flegrei has seen major eruptions 39,000 and 15,000 years ago as well as a more recent resurgent dome. In the past 5000 years several minor eruptions occurred, most recently in 1538, and non-eruptive activity was been recorded from 1950 to 1952, 1969 to 1972, and 1982 to 1984. In such a densely populated area it is important to understand and possibly predict the likelihood of new eruptions. In 2009 a new fumarolic vent appeared and since 2005 increased hydrothermal activity has manifested as mud pools, fumarolic vents, and localised seismic activity adding to the urgency of work being carried out to understand the system better.

Garden City veins

Garden City
A network of prominent mineral veins below a cap rock ridge on lower Mount Sharp has been named Garden City. The vein complex offers a three-dimensional exposure of mineralised fractures suggesting fluids moved through the fractured rocks, depositing minerals in the fractures and affecting chemistry of the surrounding rock. Several generations of veining can be observed and numerous geochemical analyses have been taken.
