NEWSBREAKERSIntraplate earthquakes down to mantle convection?New research and modelling has found that the location of intraplate seismicity in the western United States appears to be predominately controlled by deep mantle convection processes. The authors of this work contend it implies that mantle flow plays a significant and quantifiable part in shaping topography, tectonics, and seismic hazard within other intraplate settings as well.

GSA EVENTSMember-for-Member discountThe Geological Society of Australia is offering a Member-for-Member discount on 2015 fees. If you are a full member and sign up another full member for 2015 you both will receive $50.00 off your 2015 membership. Already paid 2015 fees? Sign up a full member and we will reimburse you $50. AESC 2016: Program themesThe AESC 2016 offers six themes. Within each Theme there will be dedicated Sessions. Earth's Environment: Past to Present Theme coordinator: John Tibby Contact: john.tibby@adelaide.edu.au Tectonics of the Planet: Craton and Continental Formation and Evolution, Ocean Plate Tectonics, Plate Margin and Plate Interior Tectonism Theme coordinator: Stijn Glorie Contact: stijn.glorie@adelaide.edu.au Deep Earth Geodynamics: Core, Asthenosphere and Lithosphere Dynamics, Coupling the Dynamic Deep Earth with Surface Tectonics Theme coordinator: Dietmar Muller Contact: dietmar.muller@sydney.edu.au Mineral Endowment: Formation and Exploration of Mineral Deposits; Their Tectonic and Geochemical Environment and Significance Theme coordinator: Richard Lilly Contact: richard.lilly@adelaide.edu.au Geoscience and Society: Education, Integration and Translation of Earth Sciences for Societal Benefit Theme coordinator: Ian Clark Contact: Ian.Clark@unisa.edu.au Earth Science for Energy: From Hydrocarbons to Renewables Theme coordinator: Peter McCabe Contact: peter.mccabe@adelaide.edu.au If you have Session suggestions please contact Alan Collins alan.collins@adelaide.edu.au National Rock Garden grows bigger. An alunite-bearing rock from Bulahdelah in NSW and a chrysoprase-bearing rock from Marlborough in Qld will be new additions to the National Rock Garden (NRG) thanks to a grant to cover the transport costs. The NRG has recently received another seven spectacular rock specimens but the site is not ready to receive such large specimens, so they are currently gracing Geoscience Australia's TimeWalk until the ground is ready for them. You can read all about these specimens and those from Bukahdelah and Marlborough in the latest edition of the NRG newsletter. Specialist Group in Tectonics and Structural Geology.Riding the Wave: A conference to showcase current research and ideas in Structural Geology and Tectonics 22-27 November 2015 Pre-conference field trip: 14-21 November 2015 Post-conference field trip: 28-29 November 2015 Key dates: Download the third circular here. For queries and expressions of interest contact: GSA Member survey is comingKeep an eye out for a GSA survey coming to you mid-September. The GSA wants to know what you think about your GSA membership, why you choose to become and continue as a member, and who chooses not to do so. This is in order to put the Society on course for increased quality of service, sustained vigour of activity and long term growth in membership. We will contact GSA members soon. IN THE NEWSSentinel upgrade a hot topicGeoscience Australia's Sentinel Hotspots system has been funded under a National Emergency Management Projects (NEMP) grant to receive a major upgrade that includes a change in frequency from 6-hour updates to 10-minute updates. This will enable emergency services to monitor fire development in near real-time. Cotopaxi causing concernThe stratovolcano Cotopaxi in Ecuador erupted for the first time in 70 years recently and continues to threaten more with almost constant steam-and-ash plumes punctuated by small explosions. ON THE WEBGeoGirls at Mount St HelensA pilot field camp for girls, based at Mount St Helens in the USA, has taken in 20 middle school GeoGirls with the aim of rekindling their interest in science and to encourage them to consider a career in earth science. A National Science Foundation grant covers the costs, along with grants from the American Association of University Women and the Association for Women Geoscientists. The successful program is expected to continue with more middle school girls next summer. Under the dome not sci-fiThe Hangai Dome in central Mongolia has been modelled in 3D from seismic data. The 3D image allows geologists to understand the complex interplay of rising mantle material, magma formation and heating of the upper crust to form the rising dome. IN THE MEDIAAnimation with biteAccurate dinosaur reconstructions have been generated in Queensland using video game programs. This has enabled developers to utilise all the known attributes of the creatures to convincingly respond in the program with instinct-like behaviour and to interact correctly with other dinosaurs and their environment. Shocking discoveryAustralian researchers have discovered the mineral reidite in shocked zircon from impact ejecta at Stac Fada in Scotland. Reidite is only known to form in nature during meteorite impact events and this discovery demonstrates it can persist for at least 1.2 billion years. This Precambrian occurrence indicates the potential for using the presence of reidite to indicate and record very ancient impact events.
