Seafloor geology map a world first
The first digital map of the global seafloor, thanks to University of Sydney School of Geosciences, will help scientists better understand how the oceans have responded, and will respond, to environmental change. It also reveals the deep ocean basins to be much more complex than previously thought.

Fossil now a state emblem
A fossil of the ancient fish Mandageria fairfaxi, found at Canowindra in the NSW central west, has been recognised as a state emblem. NSW joins Western Australia as the only other Australian state or territory to have a state fossil emblem. A competition to nickname the fossil is open for all NSW primary school children and will close on September 18.

Mining tenement refunds hurting Western Australian councils
In Western Australia exploration companies pay rent to the State Government and rates to local councils for the land they lease. However, local councils are required by law to reimburse the balance of rates companies have paid if tenements are surrendered. Some councils are now having to put local projects on hold in order to repay the unusually large number of tenement surrender reimbursements created by the current downturn.

Is this the oldest flowering plant?
A fossil of the plant Montsechia vidalii found in Spain and thought to be approximately 130 million years old reveals the aquatic species had seeds enclosed within a carpel thus making it an angiosperm even though no actual flowers are obvious. The Cretaceous date makes it slightly older than the previous holder of the title of oldest flowering plant.

Palaeontologist one of many to break the brick ceiling
Just in time for Christmas you can now buy science themed LEGO kits that might just feel close to home. A Dutch geochemist at the Swedish Museum of Natural History won a LEGO Group design contest with her kits featuring LEGO's first ever female scientists including a palaeontologist (complete with dinosaur), an astronomer and a chemist. Also under consideration for a future kit is a field geologist carrying a g-pick, compass and geological map. The first kits are ideal stocking fillers: you know you they want one!
