NEWSBREAKERSQueensland rattledEarthquakes centred east of Fraser Island in excess of magnitude 5 have recently rattled Queensland in quick succession, adding to numerous magnitude 3 and 2 earthquakes in the same area around the same time. While regarded as normal intra plate crustal adjustments to the stresses created by the Australian plate's movement north, the magnitude 5.7 earthquake recorded on 1 August was the second largest in Queensland's recorded history. A magnitude 6.0 occurred in 1918 near Gladstone.

Ken McClay confirmed as a Plenary Speaker Ken McClay is Professor of Structural Geology, Department of Earth Sciences, Royal Holloway University of London. He graduated with a BSc Honours degree in Economic Geology from Adelaide University, has an MSc in Structural Geology and Rock Mechanics, a PhD in Structural Geology from Imperial College, University of London and a DSc from Adelaide University. Since 1991 he has been Professor of Structural Geology and Director of the Fault Dynamics Research Group. Current major research projects include 'Tectonic and Structural Analysis of Deepwater Fold Belts' and STAR - 'Structural Analogues for Reservoirs'. Ken has carried out wide-ranging research on all aspects of structural geology applied to both the mining and petroleum industries. This has included field-based research in NW Scotland, the Spanish Pyrenees, Indonesia, Yemen, Iran, Australia, Canada, USA, Chile, Argentina, Greenland, Norway, Turkey, Ethiopia and Gulf of Suez - Red Sea Egypt. His research interests include extensional, strike-slip, thrust and inversion terranes. He runs a large experimental analogue modelling laboratory for the simulation of fault structures and sedimentary architectures at Royal Holloway. Ken has written a book for mapping structures in the field, edited four major volumes on Thrust Tectonics, and has published widely on structural geology and tectonics. He is a consultant for the international mining and petroleum industries and has given many short courses to industry. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, Chartered Engineer, and Fellow of the Geological Society of London. He was the 1994 - 1995 Bennison (USA) and the 1999 Roy M. Huffington (International) Distinguished Lecturer of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Data Metallogenica, the GSA and GSA member benefitsData Metallogenica is the world's largest mineral deposit database, a unique technical information system made possible through the support of over one hundred international Foundation Sponsors from industry, government organisations and professional societies including the Geological Society of Australia. It already contains quality technical information on over 5,000 mineral deposits of all kinds from around the world and provides access to a vast library of other material. Because of the GSA's foundation involvement GSA members can subscribe as an individual to Data Metallogenica for $100 per year for unlimited access and downloads (this is a 50% discount compared to non-members). For queries and expressions of interest contact: New AAP Memoir #47A Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian-Turonian) south polar palynoflora from the Chatham Islands, New Zealand IN THE NEWSSydney to suffer if stonemasons axedThe New South Wales state government plans to retrench a team of stonemasons responsible for maintaining hundreds of iconic sandstone buildings across Sydney, including the Art Gallery of NSW, Government House and the State Library. Concerns have been raised that in outsourcing the work the costs of maintaining the heritage sandstone buildings of Sydney will escalate, rare skills will be lost and restorations will take longer.
Mining sector pessimistic about jobs growthA new survey of mine managers suggests the industry expects to see an ongoing contraction in the near term with further job losses in both mining directly and the supply chain more generally. ON THE WEBUNCOVER web site unveiled and AMIRA Roadmap for Exploration launchedThe Minister for Industry and Science Ian Macfarlane, together with the Western Australian Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Bill Marmion, recently launched the AMIRA Roadmap for Under Cover Exploration, a key element in the UNCOVER program. Geoscience Australia is hosting the website for the Australian Academy of Science's UNCOVER initiative. The purpose of the initiative is to focus Australia's relevant geoscience effort on providing the knowledge base and technology that will substantially increase the success rate of mineral exploration beneath post-mineralisation cover in Australia. The web site provides information on the initiative as well as active projects and news of UNCOVER events. Sex in the Ediacaran a complex affairAn Ediacaran fossil from Canada, known as Fractofusus, is providing an insight into its reproductive mode thanks to excellent preservation of generational clusters of the organism. However, teasing apart the sexual and asexual behaviour and modes of reproduction of such organisms is still proving a challenge. IN THE MEDIAStavely stratigraphic drilling data releasedThe first results from the Stavely Project, western Victoria, have been released. The Geoscience Australia Record and Data Package summarises results of the stratigraphic drilling program, which was undertaken as part of this project in collaboration with the Deep Exploration Technologies CRC. The Record and data packages are available as free downloads. Ancient magnetic field older than thoughtArchean to Hadean zircons from the Jack Hills conglomerate in Western Australia contain magnetic inclusions that allow the early geodynamo history of the Earth to be documented. Zircons between 3.3 billion and 4.2 billion years old have recorded magnetic fields suggesting the magnetic field is 550 million years older than previously thought. If correct this has implications for the evolution of life and the development of plate tectonics and the early atmosphere.
