ESWA a finalist in the Premier's Science Awards

Earth Science Western Australia (ESWA) has been announced as a finalist in the Western Australian Premier's Science Awards. It is a great honour to be named a finalist in the Chevron Science Engagement Initiative of the Year category and speaks highly of the great work done by ESWA in raising the profile of Earth Sciences in Western Australian schools. The GSA wishes ESWA the best and hopefully we will see ESWA announced as the winner of the category during science week in August.

Pluto leaps into view

Pluto's Tombaugh Regio

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft made its much anticipated fly-by encounter with Pluto. The stream of images has been hard to keep up with but there is no doubt the geological features found on Pluto will be cause for much research and debate for many years to come.

Already a 'young' craterless plain informally named Tombaugh Regio after Pluto's discoverer - Clyde Tombaugh - is proving difficult to explain but suggests a geologically active surface in the recent past.

AESC 2016: partnership prospectus now available

Richard Goldfarb

The AESC provides an ideal environment to promote emerging opportunities in your state, or organisation, for your managers and leaders to meet and talk with the new generation of professional geoscientists, to hear about the latest developments in geoscience, and to connect and network with your peers. The partnership prospectus is now available here.

Keep an eye on the web site and look out for updates on-line and in TAG. For more information contact Caroline Forbes: caroline.forbes@adelaide.edu.au or program information Alan Collins: alan.collins@adelaide.edu.au
http://aesc2016.gsa.org.au/

Richard Goldfarb confirmed as a Plenary Speaker

Richard Goldfarb received his BS degree in geology from Bucknell University, an MS degree in hydrology from the MacKay School of Mines, and a PhD degree in geology from the University of Colorado. He was a research geologist with the Minerals Program of the U.S. Geological Survey for 35 years. Rich worked on the program's Alaskan resource assessment projects for three decades, leading the Survey's Alaska geochemical exploration research group during the late 1980s and 1990s. Since the middle 1990s, he has been involved with many of the Survey's international metallogeny studies and was most recently chief of the Mineral Deposit Models project. As of the start of 2016, he divides his time as an adjunct professor at the Colorado School of Mines, University of Western Australia, and the China University of Geosciences, as well as serving as a consultant to the exploration industry. He continues to run many workshops on gold exploration for industry geologists.

Rich's major expertise is the geology of gold deposits. He has conducted studies on the distribution of gold deposits throughout the world, compiling some of the most comprehensive global descriptions of their spatial-temporal setting and evaluating their controlling factors as guides to exploration. His research has been focused on global metallogeny, geology of ore deposits in the North American Cordillera with emphasis on orogenic gold, and distribution and geology of lode gold deposits in China and elsewhere in Asia. Rich has authored more than 200 papers on mineral resources, with many recognized as the authoritative research on orogenic gold and on aspects of regional metallogeny, as well as editing numerous books. Rich is Past-President of the Society of Economic Geologists and was past chief editor of Mineralium Deposita.

Data Metallogenica, the GSA and GSA member benefits

Data Metallogenica is the world's largest mineral deposit database, a unique technical information system made possible through the support of over one hundred international Foundation Sponsors from industry, government organisations and professional societies including the Geological Society of Australia. It already contains quality technical information on over 5,000 mineral deposits of all kinds from around the world and provides access to a vast library of other material. Because of the GSA's foundation involvement GSA members can subscribe as an individual to Data Metallogenica for $100 per year for unlimited access and downloads (this is a 50% discount compared to non-members). Volcanoes off Sydney!

A cluster of extinct volcanoes found off shore from Sydney recently is 20 kilometres long, six kilometres wide and rises up to 700 metres off the sea floor. The unexpected find, thanks to a research vessel surveying for fish breeding locations, expands our knowledge of the sea floor in this region and demonstrates the new capabilities of the RV Investigator.

A tale of pyrite, plate tectonics and extinctions

Trace element analysis of pyrites isolated from marine sediments spanning 700 million years has revealed that there were certain periods when nutrient trace elements were highly enriched in the oceans, and other periods when levels were very low. It is postulated these nutrient cycles are linked to plate tectonic cycles and that in turn the low levels might have even played a role in the end of the Ordovician, Devonian and Triassic mass extinction events.

This dinosaur won't bite when handled

The Australian Dinosaur, Leaellynasaura amicagraphica, will feature on a newly minted collector coin as a part of the Perth Mint's Australian Age of Dinosaurs series. The dinosaur, found at Dinosaur Cove 30 years ago, was named by palaeontologists Patricia Vickers-Rich and Tom Rich after their daughter Leaellyn.

Feathered dinosaur causes a stir

A feathered dinosaur with wings like those of a bird has been unearthed from Cretaceous deposits in China. The 1.8 metres long carnivore was covered with simple hair-like feathers over much of its body, with large, quill-like feathers on its wings and tail. By far the biggest feathered dinosaur known there is now much discussion as to whether it could fly.

Sanstone-mudstone contact

Spot the contact!
Curiosity has found a contact between a pale mudstone, like bedrock at Pahrump Hills, and a darker, finely bedded sandstone above the Pahrump-like mudstone. This sandstone is called the Stimson unit. There also appears to be a thin band of coarser-grained rock that's different from either of them at the contact.
