Global volcanic hazards quantified

For the first time a thorough analysis of global volcanic hazards has quantified the risks of living near a volcano. World wide 800 million people live within 100 kilometres of a volcano that could erupt. However, there are 62 high risk volcanoes that warrant special attention and 90% of the risk is found in just 5 nations: Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, Mexico and Ethiopia.

Invitation to attend the Geological Society of America Penrose Conference

The Geological Society of America has formally invited GSA members to apply to attend the upcoming Penrose Conference, June 22 - 27. The conference title is: Extensional Reactivation of Thrust Faults, Coseismic Surface Rupture, and Crustal Evolution in the Eastern Basin and Range Transition Zone Evanston, Wyoming.

The conference will address active (Pleistocene to late Holocene) extensional tectonics over-printed on preexisting Sevier and Laramide structures, tectonic geomorphology, earthquake hazard/risk, neotectonic effects on hydrocarbon occurrence, and crustal evolution in the eastern Basin and Range transition zone, however, it is limited to a maximum of 80 attendees.

An application form is available on the Penrose Conference website. The application form or, alternatively, an email containing the requested information should be received by the Conference Chairman not later than March 13, 2015.

Successful applicants will be notified by return email not later than April 24, 2015. Registration materials will be forwarded to Conference attendees by April 1, and should be completed and returned to GSA, by May 1, 2015.

Lightning can make volcanic glass

Lightning can induce the formation of glass spherules from volcanic ash due to the heat generated during the electrical discharge. Recent studies of deposits from both the 23 March 2009 eruption of Mount Redoubt, Alaska, USA, and the April-May 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland, identified large numbers of these glass beads.

Hawaiian volcanic fog

In this oblique view of Hawaii from the International Space Station the haze, known as vog, is a visible haze resulting from interactions of volcanic gases, the atmosphere and sunlight. The vog haze is transported hundreds of kilometers downwind and forms a series distinct alternating swirls known as von Kármán vortices.
