Small islands provide no shelter from tsunamis

Recent computer modelling demonstrates that most small coastal islands provide no shelter from tsunamis for on-shore inhabitants on the lee side. In many cases the modelling suggests the on-shore effects of a tsunami on the lee side of the island are often amplified and rarely mitigated.

Tectonic plates not so rigid

Large-scale numerical modelling combined with GPS velocities has demonstrated that cooling of the lithosphere causes deformation in the Pacific plate as some sections contract horizontally at faster rates than other sections.

Lava slows as it approaches Pahoa

Lava at Pahoa

Lava flowing from Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii has slowed greatly as it moves towards the township of Pahoa. Just 150 metres from the main road, it still threatens to engulf homes and around 50 residents are on evacuation alert.

Potential for Platinum-group elements in Australia

A new report, released by Geoscience Australia, reviews the distribution, geological characteristics, resources, and potential of Platinum-group elements (PGE) using about 500 known occurrences in Australia. It provides a mineral-systems-based framework for successful low-risk exploration and can be used to predict new areas and types of PGE mineralisation.

Gondwanatherians revealed

The discovery of a complete and well-preserved skull of the Gondwanatherian, Vintana sertichi, is the first time the rodent-like animal has been found as anything other than teeth and jaw fragments. The small-dog-sized animal appears to have had good low-light vision, an acute sense of hearing and a good sense of smell well making it adapted for surviving life amongst the Cretaceous dinosaurs it coexisted with.

Geoscience applied to the search for MH370

The search for MH370 includes a bathymetric survey, providing a detailed map of the sea floor topography of the search area. The survey was conducted between May and October 2014. It collected data over 150,000 square kilometres which will produce high resolution maps of the sea floor to better inform the search process.

Mars: The field trip continued ...

Mount Sharp drilled at last! The flat rock photographed here is called Confidence Hills and is in the Pahrump Hills area of Gale Crater at the foot of Mt Sharp. The reddish drilling powder has been analysed by Curiosity and indicates the rock contains more hematite than any rock analysed to date. It also provides ground-truth evidence for satellite-based analysis of the same area obtained prior to the mission.
